MWL Judicial Resources

Minnesota Women Lawyers (MWL) provides resources and support to MWL members who are considering seeking appointment to the judiciary. The Committee also assists in preparing MWL members for the judicial appointment process.

Assistance Provided by Minnesota Women Lawyers


(1) Offering "You Can Be A Judge” seminars where newly appointed judges, members of the Commission on Judicial Selection, and staff from the Governor's Office discuss the judicial appointment process and give tips and suggestions to interested candidates.  


(2) Offering document reviews for applicants who want constructive feedback and review of their application, cover letter, resume, and other written submissions to the Commission before such documents are submitted;

(3) Offering mock interview sessions for applicants who want interview practice in anticipation for interviews with the Commission or the Governor;

(4) Collecting information from candidates and judicial appointees about the application and interview process in an effort to better prepare our members for the same.

(5) Providing MWL members with information about upcoming judicial vacancies; and

(6) Recruiting well qualified MWL members for positions on the bench with a view toward increasing the overall diversity of the MN bench and the quality of the applicant pool.

>>The Commission on Judicial Selection has Annouced Two Judgeship Vacancies Are Occurring in the Fifth Judicial District

These vacancies will occur upon the retirements of the Honorable Douglas L. Richards and the Honorable Bradley C. Walker. Judge Richards’ seat will be chambered at Blue Earth in Faribault County and Judge Walker’s seat will be chambered at St. James in Watonwan County.

>>Supreme Court Announces an Attorney Member Vacancy in the Eighth Judicial District on the Commission on Judicial Selection

The Minnesota Supreme Court is seeking applications from licensed attorneys to serve as a member of the Commission on Judicial Selection. The Governor and the Supreme Court select the members of the 49-member commission that reviews and evaluates applications for vacancies in district court judgeships, some of whom are at-large members who address all judicial vacancies. Currently, a vacancy exists on the Commission for the Supreme Court’s attorney member appointee from the Eighth Judicial District.  Applicants must reside or be employed in the Eighth Judicial District. The current vacancy is for a partial-term ending on January 7, 2019.
Commission members are expected to actively participate. They receive no compensation or reimbursement for expenses.
Applicants interested in appointment to this position must submit a letter detailing their background. Resumes are welcome but not required.
