The MWL Wahl Memorial Tribute at Tubman

In honor of Justice Rosalie E. Wahl, an MWL founding mother and staunch advocate, Minnesota Women Lawyers is pleased to announce a memorial in her name at Tubman. The first floor of the Tubman Center East facility in Maplewood is devoted to providing legal services to victims of domestic violence, sex trafficking and sexual assault throughout the state. In tribute, the Pro Bono Attorney's Office at Tubman East will be named for Justice Wahl, and dedicated to her memory as a trailblazer and true leader throughout the state.

Wahl MWL Memorial Tribute is tax-deductible as a charitable contribution, as provided by law and IRS regulation.

About Justice Rosalie E. Wahl

From 1977 to 1994, Justice Rosalie Wahl served as an associate justice on the Minnesota Supreme Court. In that capacity she chaired the Supreme Court’s Racial Bias Task Force and its Task Force on Gender Fairness in the Courts. She is a past chair of the American Bar Association’s Section on Legal Education and Admission to the Bar, past chair of the Accreditation Committee of the Council of that section, and a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation.

 

Justice Wahl received her law degree from the William Mitchell College of Law in 1967 and her B.A. from the University of Kansas in 1946. She served as an Assistant Minnesota State Public Defender from 1967 to 1973 and a Clinical Professor of Law at the William Mitchell College of Law from 1973 until her appointment to the Supreme Court. Recently, Justice Wahl was presented with the National Association of Women Judges Joan Dempsey Klein Honoree of the Year Award. The Award was presented at the NAWJ’s 26th Annual Conference in Indianapolis this fall. Justice Wahl was a founding member of NAWJ.

 

About Tubman
Tubman is a multi-service agency with over 40 years of experience providing family crisis and support services, formed from the merger of Chrysalis, A Center for Women, founded in 1974; Harriet Tubman Center, founded in 1976; Family Violence Network, founded in 1982; and ElderCare Rights Alliance (ECRA), founded in 1972.

As the State’s largest provider of domestic violence services, Tubman provides 20% of all Minnesota shelter beds for women and children experiencing family violence. The agency offers a full complement of services including family violence shelter and transitional housing; legal services; mental and chemical health assessment, treatment and support; caregiver support and elder care resources; parenting education and child care; youth programming and in-school violence prevention education; financial literacy and job readiness education; and community education and professional training.

Last year, 4,079 clients received criminal court victim advocacy; legal advocacy, advice or representation in Orders for Protection and family law; or legal helpline support.

 

Harriet Tubman Center East & the Legal Services Center

Harriet Tubman Center East is a unique residential, family, and collaborative community service center, bordering Ramsey and Washington Counties. Tubman East was designed to provide expanded and streamlined access to mental health, law enforcement and legal resources, culturally-specific organizations, and healthcare.

The Legal Services Center is designed to be a one-stop service center and a collaborative community hub. Tubman and community partners will be able to deliver their core services more cost-effectively, serve more families, and improve every client’s experience. The core services offered will include: Orders for Protection, Divorce and Custody Advice, Criminal Court Advocacy for Victims, Pro-bono Attorney Representation, and Information Sessions about Family Law Issues.

In addition to offices for Tubman staff advocates, attorneys and interns, the Legal Services Center will include workspace for law enforcement, city prosecutors, pro-bono attorneys, partner organizations, and other judicial and criminal court systems to work directly with clients. There will also be an interview soft room, a legal resource library, a law enforcement interview room, interview observation room, and legal conference room.
