Kendra Brodin

Kendra Brodin serves as Director of Lawyer Talent at Briggs and Morgan, P.A. In her role, Kendra is responsible for associate recruiting efforts, professional development programming, and diversity initiatives.

Prior to joining Briggs and Morgan, Kendra served as Client Development Manager at Merchant & Gould. Kendra has also served as Executive Director of a leading staffing and recruiting firm in Minneapolis, Director of Career and Professional Development at St. Thomas School of Law, and spent several years providing private coaching and consulting services related to issues impacting law firms and lawyers with a focus on supporting women lawyers. Kendra has also served as the director of a local non-profit and a candidate for the state legislature, in addition to practicing law.

Kendra has been published in local and national legal publications, including the National Association of Women Lawyers’ “Women Lawyers Journal” and the American Bar Association’s publications “The Woman Advocate” and the “ABA Journal”.

Kendra received her law degree with honors from the University of Minnesota School of Law and her master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania where she served as President of the graduate student body. Kendra received her bachelor’s degree from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois with summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa honors.  Kendra is married to the Rev. Dr. Ryan Brodin and together they have three children born on three different continents who have joined their family through the miracles of both birth and adoption, so she hopes to be raising future members of Minnesota Women Lawyers, the Minnesota Asian Pacific Bar Association and the Minnesota Hispanic Bar Association. Kendra is a Girl Scout troop leader, performs in community musical theater, and is a classically-trained pianist, so you may hear her tickling the ivories with fellow lawyer musicians at various MWL and other local events.  (Contact Kendra at 612-977-8238 or

This article was featured in the Fall 2017 Issue of With Equal Right

If you took a look at my column in the last issue of With Equal Right, I described my “big tent” theme for the 2017-2018 year. My goal in the coming year is to underscore the fact that Minnesota Woman Lawyers’ membership is made up of a deeply diverse and interesting group of women. MWL truly is a “big tent” under which all are welcome.

Another way to think about the “big tent” is to envision there being something for everyone within MWL. Whatever your goals are with MWL membership, you can accomplish them. This issue of With Equal Right is about making the most of your membership, and I invite you to take a look at all of the amazing opportunities for involvement with MWL.

As I reflect on the many choices you have in where to invest your time with MWL, a few significant categories of opportunity emerged:

Committees: MWL has nine standing committees that all serve unique purposes. You are welcome to join a committee at any time. The committees are: Chapter Coordination; Community Action and Advocacy; Development; Equity; Programming (general); Programming (Annual Conference); Programming (CLE); Programming (Networking); and, Publications. All of the committee descriptions are listed on the MWL website along with email addresses for the committee leadership. Reach out and let the committee leadership know you are interested in getting involved. You will be welcomed with open arms.

Chapters: MWL has four regional chapters. If you live outside of the Twin Cities area, I encourage you to connect with your regional chapter. The regional chapters include the Central Chapter, the Northeastern Chapter, the South Central Chapter and the St. Croix Valley Chapter. Leadership is listed on the website, or reach out to our MWL staff to connect you with someone in your regional chapter.

Events: The MWL Calendar of Events is full of fantastic opportunities to connect with other MWL members and take advantage of all of the terrific programming available to you as an MWL member. To access the Event Calendar, simply go to the MWL website and click on “Events.” Check out the article later in this issue of With Equal Right on our Rosalie Wahl Lecture keynote speaker, Lauren Stiller Rikleen. I hope to see you at the Wahl Lecture on November 9.

Affinity Groups:  MWL has several affinity groups focused on bringing together members around special interests or commonalities they share. Currently, the MWL Affinity Groups include: Book Club; Knitting Group; Legal Wine Lovers; Master Attorneys; Professional Parents; and, Solo/Small Firm Group.

Networking with Other Members: One easy way to make the most of your MWL membership is to reach out to other MWL members and introduce yourself. I’ve found that MWL members are eager to get to know one another, so if you encounter another member you would like to get to know, send her an email or give her a call. I bet she would be happy to expand her own network and get to know you.

In addition to the other events happening this fall, one event of special note is the 11th Annual Girl Scout Law Day. On November 18, the Community Action and Advocacy Committee will host this popular event for girls in grades 3-5. Both of my daughters have attended this event with their Girl Scout troops, and I’ve had the opportunity to attend as a Girl Scout leader.  At this event, Girl Scouts learn about many facets of the law, from learning about how a bill becomes a law, to hearing about a day in the life of a police officer, and exploring the many kinds of careers in law. The morning event concludes with an exciting mock criminal trial, and it is inspiring to see the girls consider how they might pursue a career in the law one day. To volunteer at this event, email Kelsey Kelley at

Just as the MWL “Big Tent” has a place for everyone of every career and background, it also has something for everyone. If you are looking to deepen your involvement with MWL, please reach out to me personally at, our Executive Director, Deb Pexa (, or anyone else on the MWL Board. We’ve all found a home here at MWL, and we want to help others join our growing community of women attorneys growing together and supporting each other.
